On December 1, 2015, Famighetti & Weinick, PLLC partner, Matt Weinick, visited John F. Kennedy High School in Bellmore, New York as part of the Nassau County Bar Association’s Lawyer in the Classroom program. According to the Bar Association’s website, the program aims to “enhance understanding of the law and to promote responsible citizenship.”
Weinick spoke with two periods of criminology classes comprised of students from grades 10 through 12. The discussions touched on issues related to First Amendment free speech, Fourth Amendment unlawful searches, and Fourteenth Amendment equal protection. In particular, the classes discussed the extent of students’ rights under those Constitutional provisions. The students posed thoughtful questions about, among other things, administrators’ rights to search students and their cars and how certain dress code policies may lawfully be enforced.
The visit was particularly significant for Weinick who graduated from Kennedy in 1995. Weinick thanks the school for inviting him back, Ms. Negron for putting together the program, and the Bar Association for arranging the visit.
